Humans are sentient beings: for example, they have the capacity to have subjective experiences and feelings. But is there sentience across different species, including non-human animals, and in AI systems? And how do we need to understand “sentience” to address these questions? In the seminar, we will read and discuss Jonathan Birch’s recent book The edge of sentience. Birch argues that understanding sentience is crucial for ethical considerations in how we treat other beings, whether they are non-human animals or AI systems. There will be a workshop with Jonathan Birch at the University of Bochum on 12-13 June. Our seminar will attend this workshop, providing an opportunity to interact directly with Birch and engage in discussions about sentience and ethics.nn
