000000 The Metaphysics of Normativity (Schmidt)

Surprisingly, the world contains not just descriptive facts (like the fact that there’s a tree outside my window), but also normative facts, such as the fact that it is morally wrong to torture babies. In this seminar, we explore the nature of the normative, both in the practical/moral domain and in the epistemic domain. For instance, we ask whether there are (substantive) normative facts at all; how different normative properties relate and which is the most fundamental; whether they depend on a subject’s belief or not; or how normative facts fit into the world of natural/descriptive facts. Readings will be provided via Moodle. For a helpful overview, see: Copp, David and Justin Morton, "Normativity in Metaethics", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Fall 2022 Edition), Edward N.
