000000 Memory and Emotions (Crone)

We often remember past experiences that were accompanied by strong emotions, whether positive or negative. In recalling such episodes, we sometimes seem to re-experience these emotions, sometimes vividly, sometimes only faintly. This raises important philosophical questions about the relationship between memory and emotion: What role do emotions play in the encoding of experience? How do present emotions influence what is recollected? Can past emotional episodes be remembered through re-instantiation? In this seminar, we will explore different approaches to memory and emotion and their interrelation. We will begin with basic readings in the philosophy of emotion and the philosophy of memory, which will provide the conceptual foundation for our later discussions. As part of the seminar, we will attend the workshop “Memory and Emotions” in Bochum on June 1st; invited speakers are Sven Bernecker, Dorothea Debus, and Fabrice Teroni. Due to our participation in this event, the seminar will end earlier than usual in the semester. Room 2.242
